In an era filled with tasteless and airy “trend rock”, hearing a gritty, analog anthem is refreshing, to say the least. The new song by Micky James is an anthem implying that rock music is on its way back to its rebellious roots. “Kings” is a defiant uprising of the generationally damned and disgruntled, as well as the most authentic rock n’ roll you’ve heard in years! Micky James delivers the message that has for too long been habitually absent from a scene saturated with hollow vanity and derivative embodiment. In other words, it’s loaded with originality and well, sticking it to the man. The introduction of a few ambient strikes allows James to prepare his sermon for the sleeping sirens and the rebels in need. From that point, a swagger fueled, home-hitting, rant resides to motivate the jaded masses. A chorus of a hard-hitting gang vocal mantra led by the retro renegade builds the camaraderie we all long for in a tumultuous time of division and uncertainty. A sensation of soulful togetherness that thrives on empathy and action, and allows us to discover a radiant silver lining among these dull and dark clouds. The understanding that “We The People” will weather this storm and make it out stronger, with an enlightened comprehension of what it means to be a brother or sister of the human race. The rest of the song illustrates an insightful change and the fiery sparks of revolution. From pressurized lyrics like “Are we waking up? Or sleeping at the wheel while they’re taking our time?” to a statically charged guitar solo with enough raw power to make Jimmy Webb proud, “Kings” is the good, the bad, and the ugly, of a modernized insurgence. In the coming months, we should expect a number of various releases from our favorite artists. It’s feasible to determine that many of these releases will draw influence from the arduous day to day experiences that we endure. To me, “Kings” has set the standard and raised the bar on the “pretentious & pretenders.” A new declaration of genuine and inspired rock n’ roll!

About Micky James:

Born and raised in the shadow of New York City, naturally, Micky had a taste for the theatrical and aspired to become an artist and performer from a young age. In his music and personal style, Micky James explores a sound and aesthetic that is nostalgic of a bygone era in rock n roll music, while still maintaining a contemporary pop ambition. Micky’s unique vocals are reminiscent of great character voices such as David Bowie and Julian Casablancas, alluding to the dark, mysterious, and romantic qualities that are so distinct to those artists. While Micky’s flamboyant fashions evoke the glamour and swagger of past rock icons, his work is both equal parts style and substance. Inspired by the authentic energy of the 60’s and 70’s iconic rock bands, James is successful in crafting a modern and fresh approach to a timeless genre, “I wanted to take pieces of nostalgia and give it a contemporary twist”, explains James. Successfully taking his vision and turning it into a reality.

“Kings”

The song “Kings” is a commentary on the current relationship between the American government and its people. Despite how engaged and vocal the younger generations of this nation have become regarding the social and political change, it seems that the powers that be continue to ignore our pleas. Though we live in a democracy, our voices too often go unheard by a leader who turns a deaf ear to us like some tyrannical king of the world.
